THAYER RECOGNIZED AS MVP FOR KENTUCKY BUSINESS COMMUNITY AND SIGNATURE INDUSTRIES

FRANKFORT, KY (May 12, 2022) – Senate Majority Floor Leader Damon Thayer (R-Georgetown) has been awarded another MVP award from the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce for his conspicuous actions to ensure Kentucky’s growth, strengthen businesses across the commonwealth and improve competitiveness throughout Kentucky. Thayer is a seven-time recipient of the award.

“I’m honored once again to receive this recognition from the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce,” Thayer said. “I make it a priority as Senate Majority Floor Leader to better the commonwealth’s economic environment to make sure small businesses thrive and Kentucky remains the global destination for our signature industries.”

According to a release from the Kentucky Chamber, Thayer played an instrumental role in ensuring the passage of top chamber priorities, including unemployment insurance reform, the Employee Child Care Assistance Partnership, tax reform, and more.

Among Thayer’s top priorities was the enactment of House Bills 500 and 607 to further strengthen Kentucky’s signature industries. Thayer carried both to final passage in the Senate; the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce strongly supported each.

House Bill 607 taxes every pari-mutuel wager at a standard 1.5 percent rate, including advance-deposit wagers and bets on simulcasts. It also directs more money to the general fund, makes the Kentucky Racing Commission responsible for self-funding, creates a self-exclusion list for problem gamblers and eliminates the track admissions tax.

House Bill 500 promotes Kentucky’s signature bourbon industry by providing clarity in the practice of selecting private bourbon barrels at distilleries. These events have become a popular attraction for tourists on the bourbon trail.
